Vahbiz Dorabjee on body shaming
Talking about being body-shamed and the pressure actresses face to look a certain way, Vahbiz said, “I think there was a pressure and I started facing it very early on in my career. In Pyaar Ki Yeh Ek Kahaani I was very thin and then because of the hours (spent on sets) and all the pressures, I started putting on weight. I got hyperthyroid at a very young age. (My weight/figure) was not in my hands because no matter how much I was trying, the weight was not going down.”
She continued, “Then society was pulling me down, friends were making fun, family was making fun. That put me more into depression to the point where one day I broke out and realized this is what I am take it or leave it simple as that. Like then I regained my confidence. My confidence was totally shattered in the middle.”
Vahbiz further added, “I’m very happy (now) that with time women are coming out and voicing their opinions. A lot of plus-size models are coming out, a lot of plus-size influencers (are there), and a lot of actresses are on the plumper side. This was a societal pressure which was placed on women before and they were always treated as the weaker sex. Now women are educated, they are working, they are so empowered, so that’s where the whole ball game has changed. Now women – whatever size they are, they are enjoying, they are wearing dressing, wearing swimming costumes. I believe nobody has the right to put you down.”
Vahbiz on morphed images
Talking about the time her morphed images went viral on social media, Vahbiz said, “That happened a few years back but I was facing body shamming very early, after Pyaar Kii Ye Ek Kahaani. And believe it or not, more than trolling, it’s always first your friends and family who think they are very funny and speaking rude comments about you, putting you down. They are like, ‘Oh my God! You put on weight. We never expected you to put on weight.'”
She continued, “So I feel like (the trolling) started more from there. And this morphing thing you are talking about happened a few years back. And I noticed they do this rubbish with everybody like they will claim somebody is dead or they will morph people’s pictures. This is a digital world, so how many people can we stop?”
