‘Begum Jaan’ movie review: This Vidya Balan-starrer is a disturbing tale with a slow narrative

If you’ve watched the original ‘Rajkahini’ starring Rituparna Sengupta in the lead role, comparisons between ‘Begum Jaan‘ and ‘Rajkahini’ are inevitable. (Also Read: Pakistan Censor Board’s decision to ban ‘Begum Jaan’ leaves Mahesh Bhatt upset)

While ‘Begum Jaan’ is high on performances, Vidya Balan’s act does not overpower Rituparna’s act. She gives it her all, but you still find her too tender in some scenes. Story wise, the narrative seems to be lagging behind and that’s a disadvantage for the movie as it could have been a bit crisper.

Overall, it’s a moving tale of women staying in a brothel, but not as good as the original.
